My dad use to play guitar around the house when I was a kid. And the song I remember him playing was “Red River Valley”. I remember him teaching me 7 chords and saying “these are mainly the only chords your ever gonna need to know.”

While playing live, I’ll periodically fall back on an old tune that everybody likes. I’ll play a verse, and when the chorus comes, I’ll stop and stare at the audience, and there’s always someone brave enough to start singing it softly at first. Then it spreads from table to table. By the time the song is finished, the entire audience is singing along.

When I taught science, I found that a lesson went best when I would at first capture their attention with some sort of demonstration, display, or a joke. Something to get them to tune into me as if I was a radio station. Then mixing humor with scientific information, I was able to get them to accept and absorb it better. Now, I have found myself transferring that into my writings. I try to combine tongue and cheek humor, with fact.
